Omega 3 Benefits
When people say that Vitamin Wow is the new wonder drug, used for thousands of years by native people, that will make you bigger, faster, your teeth whiter, able to learn a foreign language in ten minutes and will look after your cat while you're away. I always think of two words. Prove it! Which brings us to Omega 3! You've probably heard a lot about all the things that it can do. But what of those things are actually backed by cold hard medical research? Well it was fun finding out (actually not that much fun!) It tuns out that scientists have researched the benefits of Omega 3 for everything from acne to photodermatitis. Of course, just because a study has been carried out that doesn’t mean that there is a benefit, or if there is whether its clear, significant and uncontroversial. With the benefits come costs – eating more fish or buying fish oil supplements takes money. So there is a need to weigh up any benefits against the costs. With this in mind I have separate the claims for benefits from Omega 3 into three rough groups. 1. Probably worthwhile – the amount of evidence, and the desirability of the possible benefits means that it is worthwhile to spend the money to eat the extra fish or take the supplements. 2. Might be worthwhile – the evidence is less conclusive, but the potential benefits are still positive 3. Probably not worthwhile – the evidence is weak or confusing, or the evidence is good but the benefits are slight.
